Meditation and breaking addictions

Question:
I would like to begin meditating. Has anyone noticed that meditation has helped them break addictions to substances like coffee, sugar and alcohol?

Answer:
Meditation will help you become more centered and better able to respond to life. Definitely start practicing! I've been meditating daily for 10 years, and I LOVE IT!

Meditation is fun in that it isn't always predictable. For instance, just after you complete a meditation period, ask yourself about giving up coffee. Just put it out there as a thought. Over the next several days you may receive many insights. You might discover that you like the taste of coffee, but that caffeine makes you jittery. You might discover that you enjoy the "lift" from coffee. Maybe someone you respect told you to stop drinking coffee because they themselves have a hang up about it. All sorts of things can come up.

Through meditation you will discover you own truth (some people call it dharma). Every individual needs to make decisions for herself about what is appropriate in life. Meditation definitely opens these doorways.
