Question
Is Transcendental Meditation a particular part of a specific religion and what is its goal?
Answer
Desi, Thank you for your question.
Transcendental Meditation is not a religion and is not a part of any religion, although it does derive from the Hindu tradition in India. It was revived from ancient knowledge by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the late 1950's. It is a secular technique that involves appreciating subtler states of thought until the mind transcends all thought. At that point we experience unbounded bliss and alertness. Repeated experience of this state makes our mind livelier, more alert, more intelligent, and happier.
